Property Tax/Rent Rebates and Assistance with Completing the Application Available at Senator Brooks’ District Offices

Senator Michele Brooks would like to let residents know the 2015 Property Tax/Rent Rebate Applications are now available at her offices. Her staff is also available to assist residents in completing these forms.

The program, which provides rebates on rent and property taxes paid in 2015, is open to state residents age 65 or older; widows and widowers age 50 or older; and 100 percent disabled people age 18 and over. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, with only half of Social Security income included. Residents needing assistance will need to supply their 1099’s for social security, pensions, wages, interest and dividends. Those owning property must provide copies of their 2015 real estate tax bills that have been marked “paid” by their tax collector and renters will be required to have a Rent Certificate signed by their landlord.

The deadline for filing an application is June 30, 2016. The Department of Revenue will begin mailing and depositing rebates on July 1.

Application forms and assistance are available at no cost in Senator Brooks’ district offices and also from the Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, and senior centers. Applications are also available online at www.revenue.state.pa.us or by calling toll-free (888) 222-9190.

Local residents should be aware that there is no charge to file a state Property Tax/Rent Rebate form and they shouldn’t fall prey to companies offering to submit the forms for a fee.

Since the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program’s 1971 inception, older and disabled adults have received more than $5.9 billion in property tax and rent relief. The program is funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery and revenue from slots gaming.
