Safety to Be Enhanced with Roadway Improvements in Meadville City

The City of Meadville will receive $230,000 for safety improvements at a busy intersection used often by elementary school children, Allegheny College students, Meadville Medical Center patients, and Crawford County fairgoers, Sen. Michele Brooks announced today.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) approved the project recently from its Multimodal Transportation Fund, for upgrades at the intersection of North Main and Randolph streets.

“This grant will support a project designed to keep pedestrians safer, improve traffic flow and open the roads and sidewalks to those with disabilities,” said Sen. Brooks. “This project has many positive implications for the nearby hospital, schools, and fairgrounds, and for those who drive or walk through the area frequently.”

Both North Main and Randolph streets are major access routes, Sen. Brooks pointed out. New sidewalks, curb ramps, traffic signals, pedestrian poles with buttons and signals, and pavement markings are among the upgrades expected, which also brings the intersection into compliance with PennDOT requirements and the federal requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The new mast arms, poles, signal heads, pedestrian poles, audible and visual signals and buttons will help aid pedestrians in crossing the street safely. These improvements will also help many of the 100,000-plus visitors to the Crawford County Fair every August that travel through this juncture.

“This grant is an investment in the community and in pedestrian and traffic safety, especially for the very young and for those with disabilities,” Sen. Brooks said. “Upgrades will ease travel, help prevent accidents and ultimately enhance the safety of motorists and pedestrians.”

“I’d like to extend a special thanks to Meadville city officials for working cooperatively with me to make this project possible,” Sen. Brooks added.

The CFA was established as an independent agency of the Commonwealth to administer Pennsylvania's economic stimulus packages. The CFA holds fiduciary responsibility over funding dedicated to Pennsylvania's economic growth.
