Senator Michele Brooks

Crawford County to Receive Two Transportation Grants

HARRISBURG – January 10, 2017 – The safety of schoolchildren and access for those with disabilities will be enhanced with two federal transportation grants just approved for Crawford County, Sen. Michele Brooks announced today.

The first grant, in the amount of $475,000, will provide for comprehensive updates to Water Street, between Second and Third Streets in Conneaut Lake, to build crosswalks, sidewalks, lighting, curb cuts and ramps that comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

A second grant for $219,940 was also approved to repair the footbridge crossing Mill Run, which is a popular route for school children, and on the proposed Ernst Trail, which was closed in 2014 due to structural deficiencies and safety concerns.

Sen. Brooks said, “This federal grant provides a layer of safety to our roads and bridges, for the protection of area school children, neighbors, and families.  The grants also help those traveling with wheelchairs, strollers, canes and other assistive devices to navigate some of our busier streets more safely and easily.”

The projects were chosen as part of the 2012 Federal Transportation Authorization Act, based on such criteria as safety benefits, cost-effectiveness, readiness for implementation, regional significance, and collaboration with stakeholders.  These awards could never have been possible without the support of the Crawford County Planning Commission and the City of Meadville, Sen. Brooks explained.

The Crawford County projects are two of 51 projects announced today by state PennDOT officials under the 2012 federal act, known as MAP-21, to improve transportation, safety and scenic byways.
