HARRISBURG – More than $1.4 million in housing tax credits have been awarded for a senior housing project in Greenville, according to Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50).
“This innovative project will provide quality senior housing options at a reasonable cost,” Brooks said. “It’s exciting that this housing will reinvent the historic Margaret Brown St. Michael’s School for the many seniors who will call it home. I would like to thank Hudson Construction for always going above and beyond for our seniors and Penn-Northwest for their advocacy and vision for this project.”
The Schoolhouse Commons facility will contain 37 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom units for senior citizens aged 62 or older. It will include a beautiful porch for residents to gather with their neighbors, activities room, wellness programs and equipment, continuing education services, as well as a medical and commercial component. The development will take a property which has been tax exempt since the 1800s and place it back on the active tax rolls.
The low-income housing tax credits were approved by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA), a state-affiliated agency created by the Legislature in 1972.
PHFA programs and operations are funded primarily by the sale of securities and from fees paid by program users, not by public tax dollars. The agency is governed by a 14-member board.
