HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has awarded a grant to the New Castle Public Library to provide 200 laptops, improving digital connectivity for Lawrence County residents, according to Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50).
“Access to reliable internet and the necessary technology is no longer a luxury – it’s essential for education, job opportunities, healthcare accessibility and staying connected in today’s world,” said Brooks. “These laptops will empower families and individuals to overcome any barriers they may be facing and take full advantage of the digital resources they need to succeed.”
The grants were awarded through the Federal American Rescue Plan Act Digital Connectivity Technology Program. Applicants, including local governments and community institutions, demonstrated that affordability is a key barrier to broadband adoption to compete for funding. The program provides $20 million in grants statewide to improve access to broadband technology.
The PBDA, created with support from Senate Republicans, operates as an independent agency within the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. It is responsible for developing a statewide broadband plan and allocating federal and state funds to expand broadband in unserved and underserved areas across Pennsylvania.
